Santa Ana de los Cuatro Ríos de Cuenca, popularly known as Cuenca, is the capital and largest city of the Azuay province, situated in the south uplands of Ecuador. This Andean city is characterized by its architectural and cultural wealth, with hundreds of heritage buildings located at its Historic Centre. According to the UNESCO, Cuenca’s architecture, much of which dates from the 18th century, was renewed in the Cuenca’s booming economy of the 19th century, as the city became a major exporter, among other products, of quinine and straw hats.
