Guayaquil is the capital of the Guayas Province, a city of Ecuador located on the west bank of the Guayas River, a major river in western Ecuador. It is the country’s main port, and second largest city. It is also known as the Pearl of the Pacific because of its beauty and charm. Guayaquil’s metropolitan area extends over nearly 2600 square kilometers, and it is home to 3 million people.
Like many larger cities, Guayaquil’s significance is based on geography. Guayaquil was the largest shipbuilding center in Latin America’s Western Coast before the end of the colonial period. Guayaquil historic centre is located on the west bank of the Guayas River, providing a secure channel to the Pacific Ocean about 65 kilometers to the south. Guayaquil continues to be nowadays the major harbor city in Ecuador, with most of the merchandise both being imported and exported through its port.
The Pearl of the Pacific, characterizes for its typical gastronomy wealth, mainly composed by sea food dishes, such as the cazuela, the ceviche, the encebollado, and the encocado (tuna or shrimp with coconut sauce and rice). Guayaquileans’ breakfast usually consists of bolon and patacones (fried plantain with cheese).
