“Natural and living laboratory of evolution”
The Galapagos Islands are a group of 18 main islands, 3 smaller islands, and more than 100 rocks and islets, part of the Republic of Ecuador. The Galapagos are located in the Pacific Ocean, more than 550 miles west of Ecuador.
The Enchanted Islands are famous because of their unique biodiversity; many of the species living here are endemic (species seen nowhere else in the world). According to Galapagos Conservancy, the archipelago is home to some of the highest levels of endemism on earth, about 80% of the land birds, 97% of land mammals and reptiles, and more than 30% of the vegetation. The most emblematic species of these volcanic islands include the Galapagos Tortoises, the Galapagos Land Iguanas, the Darwin Finches, the Galapagos Fur Seals and the Galapagos Penguins.
The Galapagos Islands are also famous because Charles Darwin and the HMS Beagle visited this place in 1865. During a period of 2 months, he had the chance to discover the natural wealth of the archipelago, and collect some local species for research. These species would eventually be used to exemplify the polemical concepts of Darwin. Charles Darwin and his influential book The Origin of the Species will forever be related with the Archipelago of Galapagos.
